Sustainable urban extension scheme, Grantham, Lincolnshire
Acting for Larkfleet Homes, Asset initially provided strategic heritage advice on proposals to establish a sustainable urban extension on the north side of Grantham. Key issues included the potential impact on the setting of the Manthorpe Conservation Area and its Grade II listed parish church and, further afield, on the character and setting of the registered historic parkland associated with the Grade I listed Belton House owned by the National Trust. The application was refused by the Council and subsequently went to a public inquiry. Nick Doggett gave heritage evidence to the inquiry, at which the Council’s views were represented by English Heritage. Although the appeal was dismissed, the Inspector (whose recommendation was accepted by the Secretary of State) agreed with our position that the harm caused to the heritage assets involved was “less than substantial”.
