Northgate Street, Warwick
‘The most handsome Georgian street in the Midlands’, according to the architectural historian, Alec Clifton-Taylor, the Northgate Street site contains a number of Grade II and II* listed buildings and lies within the Warwick Conservation Area, making it highly sensitive in heritage and conservation terms. Asset’s initial involvement was to produce a Heritage Statement as part of the suite of documents prepared for Warwickshire County Council’s marketing (via Savills) of the site for sale. This report was endorsed by English Heritage and the Councils Conservation Officer.
Asset were subsequently instructed by the new owners of the site, Ash Mill Developments, to produce a Heritage Impact Assessment for a scheme involving the reinstatement of Nos.2-22 as individual town houses after long use as Council offices, and the demolition of selected elements to the rear, including the rear wing to No.20, a Grade II* listed building. The scheme was ultimately supported by English Heritage and the Conservation Officer, following considerable pre-application discussions. The applications for planning and listed building consents were approved, with English Heritage commenting that the scheme represented a ‘very welcome return of the historic function of the buildings which will ensure their long term and appropriate use’.
